When the summer months hit, the last thing you want is an unexpected AC repair.

Even though this can cause an inconvenience to you and your family it’s possible that you can fix minor problems on your own. Here are some of the reasons that your AC unit might be having trouble and how to fix it.

Common AC Problems And Possible Solutions To Fix Them

There can be some very complex problems happening with your AC system which are best left to an HVAC professional. But some smaller issues may be fixed at home by you.

Hot Air Coming From the Vents

Coming in from a long day in the heat to an air conditioner that is only blowing hot air can be very frustrating. But there might be a quick and easy remedy.

Double-check your thermostat settings and batteries. If your batteries are dead or low, replace them and if your settings are incorrect reset your thermostat. If your AC system is still blowing hot air after trying this, then it’s possible your circuit breaker has tripped. If it has, restart it by switching it on and then off.

Odors and Sounds

If you turn your AC system on after not running for a long length of time a strange smell can occur. Usually, if it disappears fast this is the reason for the odd smell. Before you turn your AC unit on after the winter months check to make sure it’s clean. A gas or burning smell should be reported to an HVAC professional right away.

When your AC begins making strange sounds, it’s best to not leave it alone. This can indicate larger issues for your system. An inspection done by a professional will be necessary before you use your AC.

AC Leaks & Clogs

Moisture is removed from the air while your air conditioner cools down a room. If you’re seeing leaks appear on the inside or outside of your AC unit, it’s signaling that maintenance is necessary. Even though there can be many causes of AC leaks, one of the more common culprits is a clogged drain.

Take a look at your AC unit and ensure that the condensate drain line is not clogged or blocked and the condensate pump is removing the water it should be. Clean out any necessary lines that have a blockage.

AC Isn’t Turning On

An AC not turning may have a simple fix. Follow the same actions that were outlined when an AC is blowing hot air (above). If this seems to fix the problem you can move on without worry. If it still won’t turn on, contact a professional.

Your Coils are Frozen

When debris and dirt build up it will stop warm air from reaching the coil which will cause it to freeze.

If you think your coil is frozen make sure to unplug your AC unit to give it some time to thaw out. After it’s been shut off, inspect the unit and clean any areas that have dirt and debris present. This will allow the air to flow to the coil.

Cycling On and Off

Turning your AC system on and off frequently over a short period of time can cause damage to the fan and compressor. This is because it stresses the components and requires them to work harder each time it is turned back on.

Due to acid build-up, this kind of repair is best done by a professional.

Weak Airflow

When your AC has weak airflow, it will cause cold and hot drafts throughout your home. Weak airflow is usually caused by old or dirty air filters, leaking ducts, blocked vents, or low refrigerant.

Check that your thermostat is functioning properly and not faulty. You can recalibrate it if necessary. Also, make sure that you change your air filters and clear all furniture and appliances away from the air vents.

Repair or Replacement: What Do You Need?

The stress of needing an AC system repair may have you thinking that a replacement will be cheaper and easier.

Here are a few things to consider when thinking about a repair or replacement:

The Age of Your AC

The service lives of AC systems end just as any other appliance. Modern models can last 15-20 years while older models typically last 10-12 years. If your AC unit is starting to have unexpected problems and they are past its service life, a replacement may be best.

Energy Costs

The cost of your energy will increase when your AC unit is using too much energy to cool down a room. This usually indicates a problem with the air conditioner. A professional can evaluate the current state of your AC and let you know if you need a repair or replacement.

The Cost of AC Repair vs. Replacement

Repairs for central AC units range from $100-$650 and mini-split repairs tend to range from $750-$900. The cost of a full AC replacement can be from $2,000-$15,000. However, price depends on the type of unit, the size of the space, and your brand preferences.
